Why every Northridge filter must specify catalytic carbon

In 2014, LADWP converted from free chlorine to chloramine as the primary disinfectant across the San Fernando Valley distribution system. Chloramine produces lower levels of regulated disinfection byproducts and is more stable across long distribution networks. The tradeoff is that it cannot be removed by standard granular activated carbon or most off-the-shelf carbon block filters, which were designed for free chlorine.

A whole home filter installed in Northridge must include a catalytic carbon stage in the media stack. Catalytic carbon is a higher-activity form of activated carbon that handles both chloramine and associated hydrogen sulfide compounds.
